Bit confusing to use the same word to mean something different when we were talking about penalty takers in football though? Especially since they don't call the resulting punishment a "freekick" in American Football... if a wide receiver is held, he doesn't become the quarterback for the next down...

Just to backtrack slightly... In basketball the player could always takes the penalty and I've never found it odd. I'm all for it... What if the penalty is given because an opposing defender punches his own goalkeeper? Or for a less unlikely scenario, a defender deliberately hand balls to stop an own goal? What we need is an extra 500 rules to deal with who takes a penalty in any given situation (including acts of god of course)...
