Whatever happened to Caddis, I don’t remember him making any glaring errors. Was it just Nyambe reaching fitness that’s kept him out of the team?

Caddis is an old head to have around. He isn't good nor bad. I think it is a case of him taking the back seat while letting others play in front of him. He seems like the type that is a consummate team player, willing to sacrifice for the betterment of the team. I would like to see him play again, but he is more of a defensive player from thelast time I have seen him play.

Why didn't we just buy someone better though?

Higher risks, higher initial outlay, longer and higher financial commitment in wages, difficulty of persuading better quality to sign permanently at this level rather than on a short term temporary deal... oh, you weren't being serious, were you... ;)

No, I'm with you on this one. I think it would have been difficult to buy a player of Armstrong's quality at this level. It'd be nice if we could get him again next season if Newcastle avoid the drop.

You wouldn't buy him though. Not when you can get someone better on loan. Actually, you wouldn't loan him either for the same reason.

Loaning in January is always sensible as clubs tend to inflate prices and wages due to panic buying, we did exactly the same with Graham, who proved enough of a success in the back end of that season to warrant us signing him in the summer.

I'm assuming we'll be looking to do exactly the same with Armstrong this summer, as well as with Chapman and possibly Antonsson too. The argument at the time (from you and Blackbat) was that we shouldn't have given Graham a contract after his successful loan spell and should have looked to loan someone else instead.

So if you're looking to score points your comparison should at least be consistent, so that would be that we shouldn't bother signing Armstrong in the summer and try and loan someone else instead

I'm a bit perplexed about the comments made re Armstrong. Graham, Dack and Armstrong are an outstanding attacking combination. Frankly I think we should push the boat out and sign the lad. Not sure about Antonsson but Conway seems past his best - he'd be on my list to go this summer, along with Whittingham, Ward,Gladwin and Evans.

Uh huh. The actual point being that there's a pool of superior talent available for loan from higher level reserve sides that would be more expensive to buy outright, or not interested in joining permanently. And if you're aspiring to improve season on season, short term deals are better suited for repeated squad rebuilding. It's not a case of saying that hypothetically there's always someone better available. But I'm sure you already know that.... ;)

Indeed, we should have. Three more goals from an alternative loanee striker and we'd have stayed up...

Maybe we should have loaned a better defender.

Well, under normal circumstances you wouldn't sincerely argue with the bleeding obvious... ;)
