Wanting a positive reaction on Sunday. Cut out the stupid mistakes and let’s get at them. I’m hearing them have a bit of a defensive dilemma with players out so let’s try and take advantage. My lineup:

Raya
Nyambe
Rodwell
Mulgrew
Bell
Reed
Travis
Bennett
Dack
Armstrong
Graham

I'd put Nyambe on the left, Bennett on the right, ( or the other way round) drop Bell, and bring in Rothwell.

I think that is a fine lineup. I would like to see Rodwell hit midfield at some point, so maybe see Williams slot in at centreback and push Rodwell up while giving Travis a seat. He looked absolutely toasted at the 80th minute of the Reading match.

I think I am slightly disappointed we gave up on Paul Downing so quickly. He did need first team football, but he would be a great plug in right now with Lenihan out for another month.

I'd have persevered with Scott Wharton at ch.
One criticism I have of Mowbray is that he's reluctant to give our youngsters a chance. If Smallwood hadn't been injured, Travis would have been out on loan by now, Other teams seem happy to blood youngsters from time to time - surely we must have some good lads in the youth team?

I recall Grayson getting that start in the League Cup early in the season, which he looked solid. Otherwise, we really don't give or have a lot in the U-23 system that would benefit us now.

Wharton couldnt get into the Lincoln City team hence his recall and subsequent loan to Bury, where he’s only made two appearances. It’s not obvious what he would offer to our first team at this point in time.

I would argue that we give plenty of young players chances. I think you mean they have to specifically come from the under23’s squad but that’s a very arbitrary and exclusive condition. It clarifies your argument but it doesn’t give the full picture. Mowbray’s attitude to young players is much more positive than you make out.

Dack, Lenihan, Bell and Reed are under 25. Nyambe (21) and Raya (23) both came through the Academy and have been first team regulars since Mowbray was appointed. Armstrong, Brereton, Rothwell, Chapman and Davenport have all been signed by Mowbray. Nuttall gets more game time than he merits and whilst it may have taken injuries for him to get in the team, Travis is still keeping Smallwood out.

The not young players are basically Evans, Smallwood, Rodwell (under 30), Bennett, Graham, Conway and Mulgrew. Oh and Leutwiler but he is in the unfortunate position of being second choice goalkeeper. Conway and Smallwood are no longer first choice and when Lenihan is fit it’s unlikely Rodwell and Mulgrew are in the same team. Seemingly our best starting line up contains four of these players at maximum. We could admittedly give more of the Under23’s a squad place perhaps but again we’re already starting to see that with Grayson and Butterworth. Based on that, I think one must look at the bigger first team picture to judge Mowbray’s selection policy rather just our youth squads.

What an abysmal first 20, can't string 2 passes together and some awful defending costing us a goal.

It’s starting to look like 0-1 at HT might be the best we can hope for.
