Gay Footballers

Post by mcteeth » Mon Feb 18, 2013 1:26 pm

Playing for my Sunday League side yesterday in Regents Park, Sky Sports filmed our match because we were playing a side called Stonewall FC who are an openly gay team. It was all related to Robbie Rogers who recently retired aged 25 having come out as being gay.

Couldn't find a thread that referred to this topic at all, and I got my two seconds of fame walking across the pitch at 23 seconds :hyper:

We went 2 up by half time, got to 80 minutes and conceded twice, so 2-2 FT.

Wouldn't it have been better to create an 'I was on TV!' thread?

;)

Shame for Rogers, and for football really.

You didn't have to concede two late goals just to spare their feelings.

I was watching this on SSN yesterday. I think one of the problems with gay footballers not coming out is all the media attention. It was big breaking news when Rogers came out but there doesn't need to be. I don't think somebody's sexuality should make the news.

Completely agree, and also feel that the same issue is present with the reporting of racism in football. The irony being that when the media do report on such issues that actually continue to emphasise that there is a difference between white football and black footballers. Likewise with footballers being heterosexual and footballers being homosexual.

The simple fact is that they are all human beings who play football and there is no difference.

Fair play to the guys we played yesterday, really nice bunch and a decent side. They were telling us about a number of games where the opposition team, manager and random spectators have given them pretty heavy and offensive abuse quite sad really.
