Gerrard was the better all round player and did sometimes play well in an England shirt too (usually when Lampard wasn't playing). Lampard played a more specific role for Chelsea with better players around him allowing him to get into goalscoring positions. And he looked for a long time like playing for England was a great inconvenience to him, never put in the effort never mind a performance. It has changed round now, Gerrard seems to suffer from injuries and more inconsistent form, whereas Lampard actually looks a more complete player now.
