All about numbers. The 10/100/1000 represent Mb/s (that's megabits, not megabytes). Both NICs will easily be quicker than your BT infinity.

Not many LANs are gigabit, never mind home net connections. And it just moves the bottleneck to somewhere else like your storage media.

Can anyone tell me how I can check if the USB ports on my computer are 'locked down'?

Put in a USB key from home and try and access the files on it. Try copying to and from. You can lock down USB ports in lots of different ways depending on what it you are scared about people doing with them (taking valuable things out, bringing nasty stuff in, putting their tongues in them etc).

I don't need or want to lock them down, if someone want to stick their tongue in there they can go right ahead... The bank are changing the software we use to access our accounts, and have sent a questionnaire asking about my PC's specs. And it's a question on there, "Are your (USB) ports locked down?" Everything else they've asked for has been easy to look up with a few clicks. But this one I didn't know where to start or what to look for. If it's a case of physically trying them, it'll wait until Monday... I expect they're not locked down, but it's best to be sure...

I would imagine if they are locked, then unless your IT staff are retarded access to the settings to lock them will also be restricted and so trying them will be the only way.

Ours pop up the second you plug something with storage in to tell you they're locked.

I try to run IT support for my ageing mother and her equally ageing windows XP laptop. At times it feels like I'm trying to teach blind hedgehogs to dance.

She just texted me to say that she can't get online and that BT have said that it's because she's running XP. :?

I know XP support is due to end in April - but that sounds like buck passing bullshit to me.

Had a text from father in law to say his laptop soundcard is 'missing' and spotify has stopped working.... Stuck in the highlands so offered the tech support holy trail of rebooting.

Not only did it work, but he updated XP in a moment of exuberance (he previously assumed it was spam) and claims it's like using a new laptop.

Farfetched I'm sure... But could microsoft have done a rare decent thing and just fixed everything on their way out?

Cool. Now I just have to talk her through updating XP without the wifi.

A LAN cable seems to be the immediate solution. Now I have to teach her (via text) what one is, where you get them from and where you plug it in. :-(
