The world - who learns which foreign language?

Post by daib0 » Sat Sep 10, 2016 11:35 am

The principal first foreign language - what second language do most people learn from each country around the world?

Any surprises in there, for you?

Not sure why Sweden has Swedish - are they all bilingual 50+% English speakers now?

I'm surprised that they bothered including Italian and Turkish.

Sweden's second language is English according to this.

this survey is only what people learn, not USE. If it is solely "usage" we're after then apparently POLISH would now be first foreign language in England!! :yeahright: :D

French in Canada is a bit of a cheat. It's the first language in Quebec.

The languages are both 'first' or at least 'co-equal' as you say for Canada.. I think it's meant as a bit of fun to be honest. But hardly definitive. If one language has a 20% following and another 19% only the higher one shows in the colours.

Co-firsts is something we didn't used to get years ago. Look at Norway and Finland - English is considered co-equal to Norwegian and Finnish, so giving Spanish as the first foreign language ...

A real curiosity is the Basque border province of Guipuzcoa - a three-way almost equal split between Spanish, French and Basque !

They speak Spanish in Alaska and Greenland ? :shock:

and it's included in Finland and Norway, but not South America ? That is one crazy map.

no French speaking people in France too. :shrug:

This must have been put together by the same people who do those FIFA World Rankings or something, but have Spanish as a second language and also studied Italian for a number of years. (Would often do the two languages on the same day which could cause one or two issues)

Alaska = U.S.A.
Greenland = Denmark

I imagine.

Plus, it's the foreign languages spoken. In Argentina, Spanish is the national language, not a foreign language.

You picked up on the South America bit but ignored the 'no French speaking people in France too' bit? :yeahright:

I didn't feel the need to do more than one example.

Providing too many examples of how gun laws need to be hardened in the US and so accidentally fillibustering yourself in the US senate house.
