Externam hardrive has lost/delete lots and lots of my files

Post by Joe » Thu Aug 16, 2012 12:41 am

So I was listening to music on itunes (via my ex HD) then when it changed tracks it could not locate track. So I skipped to next, again could not locate. Then I see that EVERY SINGLE track in hard drive has gone.

All the folders are still on the hard drive. But all are EMPTY. Recycle bin is empty (as it was). And they are no where to be found.

My hard drive was the only place I had them saved as I recently restored windows.

Any ideas how this happened. And where they could be, or how I can retrieve them?

Resolved:

3 days ago I was frsutrated by the fact my ex HD was full of hundreds of folders of mainly music artists, but mixed in with video, picture, document folders. So I created a dedicated music folder in the same place and moved all folders here.

Worked fine for 3 days until now.

I just searched HD and found all my mp3s in this folder (which admittedly I forgot I created). Strangely all the original folders I thought I'd moved had remained in their original place, only empty.

So itunes has sucesfully located the new music folder mp3s for 3 days, then all of a sudden decided to ignore them and look at the original, now empty folders?!

I had just run a CC cleaner reg fix this afternoon, not that I can think it would have affected anything.

Anyway, tomorrow I shall delete all the empty folders. Delete my itunes (defunct) library. And add all the folders from my recently created Music folder to itunes. And cross my toes.

All in all, this is surprisingly funny. A bit like watching someone punch themselves in the balls.

You moved your own files and then forgot, causing you to think they'd all been deleted while using iTunes.

Possibly it may be more stupid than punching yourself in the balls. I was being generous. ;)

I was in extremely frustrated mood. And also was quite in a drunken state.

I think that's covered by the 'while using iTunes' part of Eth's post. ;)

Recommend me a good media player that will play files direct from my hard-drive, without the need to copy them to my laptop HD, and without the insistence of duplicating my files 13 times. I'd also like a nice interface, as that's why I've stuck with iTwats.
