League One Team of the Season

Post by mcteeth » Wed Apr 04, 2018 1:26 pm

Raya, Mulgrew and Dack have all been named in the team of the season if you care about these types of things.

Can't argue with Mulgrew and Dack but the choice of Raya is a little odd despite the fact that he's been very good aside from his awful kicking. I think he's joint top for clean sheets with Walton at Wigan who I think overall is the better keeper. They may have the same number of clean sheets but Walton has conceded 11 fewer goals and is probably more capable of kicking a ball straight.

Dack has been nominated for player of the season too which I think he'll win ahead of Powell.

How is the team decided? If it's just on cold statistics, then your point about Raya would stand. But it's hard to see how they'd pick the best right back in the league on that method. If it's a panel who've watched all the games, or players voting for who they've found toughest to play against, then it's not just a case of who's let the fewest goals in.

...just looked it up, it's a panel. So subjective, based on performances.

Well to a large extent certain stats in certain positions would support a subjective panel decision. For example Dack's key stats support anyone's opinion this season that he's been a brilliant attacking midfielder.

If it was purely subjective based on performances then that makes the inclusion of Raya even stranger. As much as I like him I just don't think he's the best keeper in the league.

The stats suggest he is but his performances overall might dilute that somewhat.

Either way it'll be a confidence boost for a young keeper so you have to be pleased for him.

Can't say I know enough about all the 'keepers in the league.

But according to here, Walton's only played 23 of Wigan's 38 games. Jamie Jones played the other 15. Which obviously makes a bit of a difference when you're looking for the best over the whole season...

Sure, I think it just threw me slightly as I'd rate Walton and Henderson at Shrewsbury above Raya.

As I'd have been less surprised to see Smallwood make the team as he's basically been almost faultless this season.

And to think that Armstrong and Lenihan wouldn't even have been considered!

Yep. It was an obvious mistake. Someone better would have clearly been better.

Particularly if they could juggle chainsaws without any intention of hurting people.

You can juggle chainsaws without intending to hurt someone quite easily: by being reckless! :hyper:
