Blackburn v Shrewsbury Capital One Cup 11th Aug 2015, 19:45

Discuss all things Rovers related except...

Do we need to concentrate on this Cup?

If you have expectations of a team under an FFP embargo to be easily challenging for promotion then you're going to spend a lot of time being frustrated. Reality always bites eventually.

Again, as a club under FFP, you will have a limited choice of managerial pull - why would you think we can attract someone better now than when we weren't under embargo? Surely the sensible and stable route is to show some loyalty to a man who has made some outstanding signings with no money and brought the club back from the brink of relegation to league 1. If we end up flirting with relegation again I'd have some sympathy - while we sit midtable it just smacks of unrealistic expectations.

Lets be proactive in that case, sell Rhodes, Marshall and Hanley to Burnley, get out of the financial restrictions now, aim for mid-table as you say and start again next season... Sound realistic enough for you?

I wasn't able to go last night but from many accounts it was similar to the Wolves game, with a performance appearing to lack any real urgency/ motivation. This is a worrying sign two games in to the season, especially from players who should be trying to stake a claim for a place at the weekend.

Going off topic a little, with people already questioning the manager; I have severe doubts that he's capable of taking us to the next level and pushing for promotion, however if the club backs the manager over the summer then they need to be given sufficient time in the new season. This was the view I took with Kean, after feeling he should have gone after his poor first season, once the decision had been made to keep him then I felt it was pointless to get rid in early September when some of the protests began. Regardless of general fan opinion, Bowyer gets on well with the owners and I can't see him going anywhere unless we're under serious threat of relegation.

I still feel the squad we have has underachieved under Bowyer, albeit he is responsible for pulling much of it together with a modest budget. Although he has overseen a period of cost-cutting at the club, the only cast iron first team player we've sold under his tenure (prior to this summer obviously) was Dann and we still have financial resources (in terms of wage bill) higher than average for this league. Regardless of this however, a key lesson from the past few years is that teams with above average managers tend to do well in the Championship, even if they have below average budgets.

Although if you sell your best players, you might end up going down...

Install a proven manager and we might have been promoted already. I'm pretty sure we can finish a place or 2 above relegation if we sold those 3. Bowyer can steady the ship, he's a pro at it ;)

Install a proven manager already and we might have gone down. Just as likely as promotion.

One thing i'm curious about is when we get out of FFP embargo and whether Venkys will continue to pump money into signings in a push for promotion at the same risk of being banned again.

Ethiaa, i don't know if you'll be able to shed any light on any of this but you seem to have more knowledge on these aspects of the club.

I suspect that the club would say that it would be a decision made at that time by the owners and they are just focused on getting the club to a point where it is financially stable and within the rules.

I also suspect it is unlikely that they would go down the route of throwing money at the club to the point where we'd end up back under embargo if we didn't go up but that's just my feeling, I've nothing to support that.

Okay thanks :) Do you think our transfer business is pretty much done for the summer now?

I'd expect another signing at least - and who knows who might go out the door

Any idea on the position? I'm still grasping at Henry joining on loan again but i don't see West Ham allowing it.

Hopefully one of Brown, Williamson or Evans out the door but realistically we know if someone leaves it's likely to be Marshall or Rhodes.

Nah, I've no idea - I've no more information on this than you mate. We all know the areas of weakness though and where GB has looked to strengthen through loans previously.

Is he still injured? He didn't even make the subs bench against Arsenal.

He'd be a good solution if Hanley left, but otherwise we probably don't need him.
