Scottish Independence
Re: Scottish Independence
Its not what they were asked - but polling suggests it should have been. Offering them a devo-max option in the referendum would almost certainly have led to that being the option chosen.

Re: Scottish Independence
I'm not sure max devolution is a sensible strategy to be honest. At least not if it is given in one foul swoop.
I'm all for nations having a greater say in the United Kingdom however I wouldn't be surprised it caused greater rift and divide. I would imagine it will fuel political parties campaigns however regarding inequality and reneged promises.
I'm also uncomfortable with a nations ability to influence Westminster but not vice versa.

Hah Alex Salmond to step down. So much for him continuing to work regardless of the outcome....

But it's got nothing whatsoever to do with the outcome of the referendum...mrblackbat wrote:Hah Alex Salmond to step down. So much for him continuing to work regardless of the outcome....

That's nice of her. Perhaps she should try and see if she can get Scottish MPs to vote on matters for Vanautu as well. And Brazil.

Re: Scottish Independence
I think she has a point. The laws in question affect Scotland. English MP gripes about not being able to vote for matters that only affect Scotland are nonsensical in comparison.mrblackbat wrote:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-33496575

Re: Scottish Independence
I don't, especially considering the Scottish get to decide how to spend my tax money, but we have no control say how to spend theirs.

I wouldn't worry too much, our tax money will in all likelihood go straight into Cameron's champagne lunch fund.

Re: Scottish Independence
Sturgeon is just trying to make as much noise as possible before everyone realises the SNP are an irrelevance as far as UK politics goes. The current government have a majority just from counting English seats, they can pass any English-only bills whether the Scottish MPs vote or not. It was more of an issue when Labour were relying on Scottish support to get a majority. Of course, the Conservatives would have an even bigger majority to govern with if Scotland was cut adrift into the North Sea. But so far as the SNP's influence goes, it wouldn't make a great deal of difference if they were all replaced by the Labour MPs they ousted.

The SNP don't vote on legislation that doesn't affect Scotland in Westminster.

Re: Scottish Independence
I can't imagine she's complaining about not being able to vote when she doesn't intend to anyway. That's more Harriet Harman's sort of thing...

Though Sturgeon has made it clear that they intend to if certain policies are brought up, such as the NHS and tax. So non story becomes a story.SheepShagginRover wrote:The SNP don't vote on legislation that doesn't affect Scotland in Westminster.
