A few days late on this, but...

Emma Thompson takes a plane to join climate change protests 5,400 miles away... tries to justify it by saying she needs to fly because of her job, but it's ok for her because she plants trees...

I can't help thinking these Extinction Rebellion protesters are making more of a case for letting them become extinct than anything else...

But surely you think it’s okay for her to have taken a plane anyway?

No problem with her taking a plane, big problem with her doing it to join a protest against doing things like taking a plane, whilst saying it's ok for her because she needs to do it, but no one else should. It's just staggering hypocrisy.

It is hypocrisy, but if her attending persuades others from using planes as much, probably worth it? :yeahright:

Nah. Hypocrisy is hypocrisy. If I was organising the protests I would have asked her not to show up. The real problem is with people who think that the action doesn't apply to them: which is exactly what Thompson actually advocated for there. It's not only hypocritical, but hugely arrogant.

It's like Bono standing in front of a crowd telling them all to text a number to donate £10 to poverty charities, whilst charging those same people £50 for a ticket, £40 for a t-shirt (made in a sweatshop in India) and £10 for a beer.

Whatever happened to leading by example?

The size of donations garnered in such a short time to repair the Notre Dame highlights the problem, and yet for the billionaires who put in to have contributed the equivalent as if I'd donated a tenner shows how easily some of these problems could be resolved.

Well, is "flying is ok for me, but not you" an argument that's going to change many opinions? To me it gives the impression she doesn't really believe in the cause, just wanted to show her face for the publicity. Now if she'd found some eco-friendly way to take part, and lead by example, that would have a better impact. But all she's done is make herself look an arrogant idiot and added weight to claims the protesters don't practice what they preach.

Emma Thompson has been an activist on climate issues for as long as I can remember - I don't think you can call her a bandwagon jumper or say its for publicity.

If the issue with the climate was that Emma Thompson is taking too many flights then it would be a legitimate argument... making the problem microscopically worse (possibly - I mean the plane would have flown anyway I'm assuming... this isn't Bono taking a private helicopter to Glastonbury territory) in order to raise the profile of an issue is ok... Could she have supported in a different way? Possibly but I think Gibbon is right overall that the ends justify the means.

This whataboutery from climate change deniers is just a cowardly refusal to deal with the issues... rather than try to engage on the subject at hand people would rather snipe pointlessly at kids for the crimes of 'having mobile phones' or 'wearing clothes'

I'm not sure. There are literally two things we can individually do which can have a realistic impact on climate change - stop flying and stop eating meat. Use Skype innit.
