Burnley manager Brian Laws has been sacked by the Championship club.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss took over in January but was unable to keep them in the Premier League.

They sit ninth in the Championship this term and lost 2-0 on Tuesday to former club Scunthorpe in what proved to be his last game in charge at Turf Moor.

Chairman Brian Kilby told the club website: "I have telephoned Brian today and asked him to step down as manager of Burnley Football Club."

He added: "Everyone is naturally disappointed and frustrated that recent results have not gone as we would have hoped.

"The board of directors has decided that we need a fresh approach in order to achieve our goal of returning to the Premier League."

The Clarets have said they will make a statement on Thursday.

i was under the impression sam would only take a job in the premiership, but he loves his north western clubs doesnt he and he fancies it he can choose between these and pne.

If he's the man I've always thought he was, seeking a kind of childish revenge by joining burnley, presumably so he can establish them as a team above us is right up his street.

Hope he gets it though, regardless, those two deserve each other.

All those burnley fans who've spent the last few years harping on about our anti-football and how they at least tried to play the correct way under Coyle and then Laws will be livid.

Of course, if BFS really wanted to get revenge, he'll try to prove a point and get them promoted by playing the type of football he got fired for not adopting. Which could backfire spectacularly. :scratch:

If Sam has any sense he will stay away from Burnley and go for PNE. Quite simply to do what he is good at and that is get teams out of trouble of relegation. Burnley will be hoping for a push for promotion with a new manager. I'm not saying Sam couldn't do that but he'll have a better chance of keeping PNE in the championship than leading Burnley back to the premiership.

The thing is, Laws didn't play football. They've been hoofing it up to Chris Iwelumo all season, confusing their fans as to why he'd changed from what had worked under Coyle. In that respect, I think it's a very similar dismissal to that of Allardyce - their results don't look too bad on paper, but they've suffered the same inconsistency as you'd expect by playing percentages. And when it doesn't work, it's fucking awful to watch.

Is this his Eric Cantona moment? What the hell is he talking about? The general shape of mountains usually means you've no line of sight to the top from the bottom - I can't think of one where the only place to see the top is from the bottom. And being on a great journey doesn't prevent you from being in the bottom of a valley. Ignoring that none of it makes any literal sense, what point is he trying to make anyway, they're enjoying being shit?
