Aston Villa win the final golden ticket to the Premiership beating Derby 2-1 in today's play off final. Derby were said to have risked a lot in the pursuit of promotion and now have to face some tough financial decisions over the summer. Villa themselves were facing administration earlier this season but have turned it around with new owners and manager.

Yeah I heard something, not sure how true, that Mel Morris was pumping in a fairly significant amount of money each money to keep the wheels turning this season at Derby.

Got a lot of time for Frank Lampard but I think, unsurprisingly, it's been over egged this season. They've achieved essentially what they seem to do, play-offs then failure and he did this with some outstanding loan players from Chelsea and Liverpool.

Made some odd calls for starting XI yesterday too.

Rovers said to be interested in free agent Stewart Downing (trying to keep the price of shirt printing down) who 34 years of age. He has quality of which there is no doubt but commanding high wages.

Conway leaving to then be replaced by another aging winger in Downing who has never played for us would seem like a stupid idea. Appreciate Conway turned down our contract offer but would Downing really be coming in, on reasonable wages, to not be a starter?

Downing set for talks with Rovers but has not ruled out signing again for Middlesboro...so he will talk to Rovers and then take that deal offered back to Boro to match it or better it... :yeahright: If Rovers have not learned from the Peter Whittingham experience along with Danny Murphy and Dickson Etuhu then god help us all. Tony just needs to find a decent centre half...one from Bauer from Charlton, Cooper from Millwall or Lindsay from Barnsley.
Rovers too linked with Sam Gallagher from Southampton who want five million. No problem with giving Southampton five million but we want Harrison Reed instead. A decent striker will prove difficult. We will have to see who becomes available over the summer. One of Rovers other targets namely Adam Mayer is reportedly staying in Holland.

I don’t mind getting downing as long as we get Marcus Maddison as well. Marcus is still fairly young and could learn from downing. Having Downing’s experience in the squad will also help. Downing played 40 games last season so the fitness is obviously still there.

Stewart Downing has now been officially released from Middlesboro who have decided not to offer him another contract. Rovers club shop will be happy if he signs as they must have some Ds some Os some Ws some Ns...etc available. Other players released by Middlesboro include Dimi Konstantopoulos...Rovers club shop will not be happy if Tony signs him.

Along with Downing now sounds like there's also interest in Whelan having been released by Villa.

Woodgate appointed by Middlesbrough apparently could have an impact on Downing with him then getting a new deal which does make sense. not particularly bothered either way if we do or don't sign him.

To add to our list of experienced midfielders we're being linked with is James Morrison who is now a free agent, along with Glen Whelan and Rodwell still not deciding on a contract.

Still quite keen on a central pairing of Travis and Rodwell as first choice. But Travis paired with Morrison or Whelan would be decent too and would feel like an improvement on Evan despite their respective ages. Got a feeling Davenport will be in the mix too as a starter.

Yeah would be a good signing having Hanley back, probably preferable over Bauer as Hanley is has a lot more experience at this level and they're similar in age.

Plus Hanley's got a massive head. He ticks Tony's box about defenders who can head it and aren't afraid to get stuck in.
